Joseph Muscat can evade the law and run a fraudulent and corrupt business because his immunity from the law was the main precondition for the current Labour Party leader. Angelo Gafa was handpicked single-handedly by Prime Minister Robert Abela, but why was this so?
Current Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa was known to Robert Abela before he was voted in as leader of the Labour Party because Joseph Muscat mentioned him to when Robert Abela and Joseph Muscat made their own Devil’s pact. In fact when Joseph Muscat demanded immunity to Robert Abela in exchange for his support as candidate to the Labour Party’s leadership, Joseph Muscat even mentioned Angelo Gafa by name telling Robert Abela that “Angel Gafa doesn’t cause any trouble”. Both of them were seriously convinced that Angelo Gafa would never rock the boat and bring Labour politicians to justice. Joseph Muscat had already appointed Gafa as the Police’s CEO.
As of very recently, Joseph Muscat kept demanding to substitute the Magisterial inquiry of him with an inquiry that is led exclusively by the Police. This is a demand he makes repeatedly, as if Joseph Muscat is convinced that Angelo Gafa by his own measure and will, would never harm him. So far, this seems to be the reality on the ground. Angelo Gafa has never investigated Joseph Muscat independently and the police who are investigating him are only doing so because they are under the guidance of a Magistrate conducting an independent inquiry on the fraudulent public hospitals deals. Joseph Muscat was never investigated by the police over Pilatus Bank, his shell-companies in Panama, Electrogas, his involvement in the cover up of the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, the wind-farm project in Montenegro and many other cases. Robert Abela even tried to protect Joseph Muscat from the ongoing Magisterial inquiry, and directly told Gafa not to arrest Muscat.
As of lately, the case of Destination Europe is one of the latest among the cases of impunity that Joseph Muscat enjoys thanks to the benevolence of Angelo Gafa. All that has been published about Delsk’s subsidiaries in Malta is known to the Police who also have all the evidence. The Police simply chose not to act on the evidence they have while the Labour Party’s power and influence through government is so over-arching that Destination Europe’s competitors are fearful of speaking out, even if Destination Europe’s practices are anti-competitive and corrupt.
Now, after Joseph Muscat and Robert Abela fell-out, Muscat’s protection will be even more limited, but Muscat still enjoys a great degree of immunity. Angelo Gafa doesn’t want to go near him fearing repurcissions on his post, and meanwile. Muscat is allowed to run his corrupt schemes and accumulate more resources as a privilege awarded to him by the government that is keeping him from facing justice. As Gafa collaborates with the inquiring Magistrate he will seem and pretend to be doing his job, but in reality he is doing the minimum possible not to “rock the boat”.
