Saved by too many scandals

Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi with Marija Sarah Vella Gafa

ADPD are right in demanding the resignation of the three government ministers responsible for regulating the building and construction industry, namely Stefan Żrinżo Azzopardi, Miriam Dalli and Silvio Schembri. Last week, Albanian construction worker Bari Balla was killed as a roof collapsed in a construction site in Sliema.

One of the Ministers who is partly and surely responsible for the current lack of enforcement and Jungle Rules state of affairs in the construction and building is Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi. He was Minister of Public Works and responsible for the Building and Construction Authority, but was relegated to a minor ministerial role following the public inquiry on Jean-Paul Sofia’s death. Economy Minister Silvio Schembri had the LANDS Department taken away from him, which was handed to Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi – weird considering that supposedly Stefano Zrinzo Azzopardi was punished for creating a situation that caused the death of a worker, and quite in bad taste considering that LANDS was also responsible for Jean Paul Sofia’s death. In turn, Silvio Schembri was even promoted to a sub-committee that will supposedly solve the Jungle Rules situation.

These three ministers will keep breaking things because by now, the news cycle is so riddled with scandals that one can’t keep up but that doesn’t mean people have forgotten. One only needs a quick look outside, or the latest social media updates to experience and see the Jungle Rules Dubai version that the Labour Party is developing.
