One of Africa’s latest dictators and friends of Russia keeps up a strong record for war crimes

Ibrahim Traore

One of Africa’s latest dictators and friends of Russia, Ibrahim Traoré has made a reputation for himself as a war criminal, just less than two years after he took power in the conflicted African country.

Yesterday, it was reported that his military killed more than 200 innocent civilians, some of them women and children in a raid against Islamic militants. Mali and Burkina Faso are currently engaged in conflicts with rebel and Islamic groups in the Sahel region. War crimes and abuses by the military of Burkina Faso have been ongoing since Ibrahim Traoré took power. The foreign press is also being expelled from the country.

The dictator who rose to power through a military coup in October 2022 that he led, sports his military fatigues and pistol when meeting world and foreign leaders. He has forced out the French military out of Burkino Faso which were helping the government fight rebel and Islamic groups, but since then the situation of the conflict has only deteriorated further. A contingent of the Russian-funded mercenaries, Wagner group is also in the country, while human rights abuses have only kept increasing since Ibrahim Traoré took power.
