Minister for Social Policy Michael Falzon has issued a bizarre statement denying the allegations that he and his Ministry had anything to do with the social benefit racket scheme. He also admitted that it was the Office of the Prime Minister that actually reported the scheme to the police and not the Social Ministry and the Social Ministry only tagged along with the officials of the OPM who reported the scheme to the police. Earlier this week, it was revealed in court that the Ministry of Social Policy actually changed decisions of social benefit applications on the reference made by Michael Falzon’s political handler Mark Calleja.The Minister doesn’t mention his political handler (Mark Calleja) in his denial.
The police didn’t dare investigate Michael Falzon and his ministry over the social benefits fraud. What they did was simply to follow the OPM’s advice, and investigate exclusively Silvio Grixti’s execution of the scheme. In fact, the police focused all their investigations exclusively on Silvio Grixti and allowed Michael Falzon to remain unchecked. Instead of investigating the Ministry, which is after all, the main source of the racket, the police simply asked the Ministry of Social policy to be handed over the files that they demanded. So, basically, the main culprit of the fraud, which is the Social Ministry, suddenly became a collaborator of the investigation rather than being a prime suspect. All the blame is shifted onto Silvio Grixti and Michael Falzon can walk out of this mess scot-free.
What’s happening with this case is very mafia-like because the owners of the racket are being allowed to be in the privileged position of being collaborators of the investigation instead of being treated as prime suspects while the blame is fully and exclusively shifted onto the executors.
Why wasn’t the Ministry of Social Policy raided by the police? Why didn’t the police raid the Social Ministry and take all the files themselves instead of having to politely ask for the files via email to the Minister’s own political handlers who may very well be guilty and part of the scheme themselves? This is a total aberration of justice.
