Ukraine has a lot of untapped natural gas and a lot of it is in the East under Russian control. Capitulating to Russia means giving up all these gas deposits.
If Germany and France had a little sense of long-term self-preservation, they would have been actively supportive of providing Ukraine with all the weapons they needed to win the war against Russia and retake all of its territory. By allowing Ukraine to win the war against Russia, Europe would then have a new partner that can help it ease its energy problems.
