Given the heavy-handedness with which MIDI reacted to the public action of Kamp Emerġenza Ambjent, which in the last weekend opened access to Manoel Island and its foreshore, I feel morally compelled to state my support publicly for Kamp Emerġenza Ambjent, the Gżira Mayor and all of those who were involved in this public action.
The current trend in over-development and private encroachment of public space has impacted the local cultural scene negatively as it has reduced the space available for much-needed cultural and educational activities. As a cultural director I can confirm that access to Manoel Island is highly coveted by event organisers and the culture industry. Sadly, I can also confirm that access to Manoel Island has been denied multiple times to organizers of cultural events. As asserted in the public concession, Manoel Isalnd should be accessible to the public, so Kamp Emerġenza Ambjent should be applauded for its actions. If there is anyone that should get in line with the law it is MIDI and other mega-millionaires whose unlawful and disorderly actions are testament to the egoism that characterizes the greedy and the deplorable.
